About Us

Jon and Caroline became tenants of Yew Tree Farm in 2002 and are committed to farming using traditional methods and support a Belted Galloway beef herd and a Herdwick hill flock.

Yew Tree Farm with its distinctive ‘spinning gallery’ is in the beautiful Lake District, in a unique picturesque setting. The Farm is one of the best known farms in the Lake district, In 1930 Beatrix Potter purchased the farm to save it from developers and later sold it to the National Trust. Today it is home to Jon and Caroline who Farm the 660 acres and welcome visitors to the historical Farmhouse accommodation and tea room.

The land is comprised of meadow, pasture, rocky intake and fell and is part of an Environmentally Sensitive Area Scheme. This scheme supports farmers who manage land to protect the habitats and special features of the lake district landscape.

Our Farm has been awarded ‘Freedom foods’ status by the RSPCA which means that we are inspected annually to ensure the highest possible welfare standards and legal requirements are met.

Our Guarantee to you

We at Yew Tree Farm became aware that our quality meat was disappearing in the mass food chain alongside meat of varying and dubious origin and quality.

We decided to offer consumers a choice, here is our pledge.

  • Our animals are reared extensively on mixed grassland or heather fell that is the natural environment for the animal.
  • Our animals are treated humanely from birth to slaughter.
  • Our animals are not routinely given antibiotics and are never given growth promoters.
  • Our animals are reared on land managed in an environmentally sensitive way, protecting habitats and landscape features.
  • We personally undertake or oversee the selection, transportation, butchery and packaging of all our animals/meat, most of this process happens on the Farm.
  • Our meat is consistently of the highest quality.
  • Our meat is hung appropriately to ensure the best possible flavour, texture and freezing capability.
  • Our meat is packaged to ensure freshness without the use of preservatives.
  • We ensure maximum possible trace ability.
  • We are happy to talk about and explain any aspect of our farming and meat production methods.

Your part of the bargain

  • Celebrate your meat product by creating delicious meals.
  • Do the animal justice by using up every bit of meat.
  • Please always buy your meat direct from reputable farmers and butchers. By being an apathetic shopping trolley driver you may be unconsciously supporting intensive and unethical farming practices and poor quality meat.
  • We are so confident that you will enjoy our premium meat that we will offer you your money back if you are not satisfied.

Enjoy it.
